How Does Smartlipo work?

The procedure is commonly performed under local anesthesia. A laser fiber is introduced through a hand piece and detachable cannula. The cannula is then inserted through a 1 to 2 mm incision in the skin and into fat pockets.

The cannula, with the tip of the fiber exposed approximately 2 mm, is then moved in a "back and forth" fanning motion. The laser's aiming beam can be visualized through the skin, allowing the physician to identify the treatment area. As the fiber tip comes in contact with the fat cells it ruptures the cell membranes and releases the fatty oil from the fat cells. This end product may then be aspirated from the site.

FDA approved Smartlipo is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a high-powered laser to destroy fat cells while tightening the skin. After the fat is liquefied, it is removed with power-assisted suction.

Smartlipo is ideal for areas of skin laxity, such as the neck and arms or for removal of fat from the abdomen, love handles, saddles bags or inner and outer thighs.

Is there a recovery period?

Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure which usually requires only local anesthesia. Some light trauma can occur. You will go home after the procedure and rest for a few hours, after which you may gradually increase your activity as tolerated. A pressure garment may be placed over the procedure area for several days depending on the body area treated. You will be able to return to work in a couple of days and resume exercise after a few weeks.

What are the advantages of Smartlipo over conventional liposuction procedures?

Both treatments effectively remove fat, but conventional liposuction can leave behind unsightly pockets of skin. The Smartlipo wavelengths have been shown to increase collagen and reorganize collagen fibers to tighten and improve the quality of your skin. SmartLipo uses smaller instruments and laser technology.

It is a more effective method of removing fat from small areas of the face, neck, arms, abdomen and areas where the skin is lax. SmartLipo causes less bleeding, bruising and swelling, which results in a faster recovery.

How many treatments are required?

SmartLipo can take an hour on the neck and several hours on larger areas. Most patients have only one treatment.

 

Am I a good candidate for SmartLipo?

Ideal candidates are in good health, close to normal body weight and have realistic expectations for the results. If the person has areas of fat that will not respond to diet and exercise, then that person is a candidate for SmartLipo

Does SmartLipo produce lasting results?

Yes! The Smartlipo procedure permanently destroys the treated fat cells. Adults do not create new fat cells. When a person gains weight, that person's fat cells simply expand. Should you gain weight, that fat will most likely be deposited in areas where the procedure was not performed.
